EVAN WAS a firm believer in maintaining a balance in all aspects of his life, a claim that caused jaws to hang open in disbelief every time he said it. Guillory, for instance, wanted to know how exactly one lettuce leaf balanced sixteen ounces of steak. However, in this instance his claim was justified. He’d just finished being nasty to Corley, so now it was time to go be nice to someone. And today’s lucky winner was Farrow’s now ex-secretary, Olivia.

Well done, Olivia.

Angel had told him her room was on the sixth floor of the TriStar Centennial Medical Center on Patterson Street. Exiting the elevator, he looked both ways, then turned right, the uniformed cop posted outside her room showing him the way. The cop’s presence was something of an overreaction by Angel, if you asked him—which nobody did—but Olivia would feel reassured by it.

He introduced himself to the cop, went to get his ID out. The cop waved it off

‘Don’t bother. You’re exactly like Detective Garcia described you.’

‘I don’t suppose I want to hear that description.’

The cop shook his head solemnly.

‘You most certainly do not.’

Evan pushed open the door quietly in case she was asleep, stepped into the room when he saw her sitting up in bed. Her head was bandaged, a purple-yellow bruise on her cheek and the associated swelling partially closing her left eye. Her lips were cut and also swollen. The distance between the injury sites implied either she’d been hit by someone with a hand the size of a basketball, or she’d been hit more than once.

Crossing the room towards her, he put on his most professional air.

‘Hello, I’m Doctor Buckley. I’ve come to give you a thorough examination.’

Had there been such a thing, he’d have won competitions for the amount of emphasis he got into the word thorough.

Olivia was a pretty girl behind the temporary disfiguration, more so when she smiled at him. It made him wish the examination story was true.

‘You’re better looking than the actual doctor. I bet you haven’t got cold hands like he has, either.’

‘Want to find out?’ Flexing his fingers as he said it.

The smile got wider.

‘Detective Garcia said I should be careful around you. Looks like he was right.’

‘So, how are you feeling?’

‘Not too bad. Apart from the nightmares, that is. I don’t really need to be in here. The doctors are worried about a concussion.’ She turned her head so that he could see the back of it, not that he could see anything apart from the bandage. ‘They threw me across the room. I hit my head on the filing cabinet. Got a nasty gash in my scalp, blood everywhere. Dwayne won’t be happy—’

Her mouth clamped shut, tears welling in her eyes. She sniffed, wiped her nose on the sleeve of her gown. He waited for her as she poured herself water from the jug on the bedside table before continuing.

‘The cops told me what happened to him. I can’t believe it. Shot in the back of the head? The whole thing is like a bad movie.
